Sapa mountainous streets are 38 km far from the capital city of Lao Cai, 376 km from Hanoi.
From Hanoi, visitors can use two methods: coming from Hanoi to Lao Cai capital city by train, then come to Sapa by car or by bike; or you can come through by car.
Located in the height of 1500 to 1800 m above the sea level, putting her back on the Hoang Lien Son range, keeping an eye on the roof of Indochina – Fansipan Mount (3143 m), Sapa enjoyed the quintessence and the neglected nature of Hoang Lien Son.
Sapa was formerly is a small plateau whose name is Lo Suoi Tung. In the winter of 1903, the exploration group of Indochina Land Survey Department discovered this sightseeing, climate of the plateau and the villages around, which marked the foundation of Sapa town.
Under French colonial period, they build many medical treatment areas, travel agents, railway stations and many villa here, then Sapa became the ideal relaxation place for authorities in the North.
Sapa was then destroyed cruelly in the border war in 1979, then it was strongly rebuilt and restored in the 1990s. Now it becomes the tourist attraction for domestic and international tourists.
The climate is subtropical and temperate with the average temperature from 15 -18 degree Celsius. There is often fog and, sometimes, snow in the winter. The weather in Sapa contains four seasons in a day. In the morning and afternoon, it is spring; in the mid noon, it is summer; in the night, it is winter. From May to August, there are a lot of rain with the degree from 1800 to 2200 mm.
The humid and favorable condition helps the tree grow a lot, which creates the green and colorful landscape for this land. Sapa is one of the rare places in Vietnam having the temperate climate, therefore, it is called the little Europe in Vietnam.
Sapa is quiet and peaceful, which is containing many marvelous things from people and nature. People think they are close to land, to sky, to forest, to mountain, to people when they are here. The architect in Sapa is not just orient but from west which is sketched by the colorful costumes of local people, all are making an unique picture of the mountainous land.
Next to the town centre is Ham Rong flower garden spreading from the foot to the peak of the Ham Rong mount. To visiting the garden, visitors have to climb thousands of stone stairs. Gardens are placed along the path with natural orchard, Europe orchard, peach flower, etc. The last point is the overview sight from the peak of Ham Rong.
In the foot of Ham Rong is an old church beside a religious abbey which was built mostly of stone. It becomes more blurring and fanciful whenever the fog from mountains comes.
In Saturday night, the mountainous street seems more sparkling due to the coming of visitors and ethnic people from other districts to attend the Love market. People talk, play leaf pan-pipe, and Khen to attract their lovers.
In order to gradually discover Sapa, visitors should use weeks or months spending in the ethnic villages such as Ta Phin, Ta Van, old ancient rock place, Muong Hoa valley, etc. The most interesting part of coming to Sapa is discovering the daily life of ethnic people. There are 27 ethnic groups in Lao Cai, and six of them are living in Sapa. Nowadays, visitors can enjpy the homestay activity to have the real experience of Sapa’s people.
The beauty of nature and modern infrastructure as well as the variety of tourism activities of Sapa make it become the most famous spot in North Vietnam.
